Interfaith Service: “Stewardship of Nature”
Opening/Welcome
Good morning, Scouts and Scouters.
Here in the outdoors, surrounded by forest, sky, and stream, we are reminded of the sacredness of the Earth.
Today, we reflect on the theme of Stewardship of Nature. As Scouts, we are called to care for the world around us — not just to enjoy its beauty, but to protect it, preserve it, and live in harmony with it.
This is not only a Scouting value, but a spiritual one shared across many faiths.
Let us take this time to reflect on our role as caretakers of creation and renew our commitment to be mindful, respectful, and responsible with the gifts of nature.
First Prayer: A Prayer of Gratitude for the Earth
Creator of all life,
We thank You for the rivers and the rain, the trees and the trails, the mountains and meadows.
May we walk gently on this Earth, recognizing that it is not ours to consume, but to care for.
Let our actions protect what we love. Let our hearts be moved by beauty and responsibility alike.
May we leave no trace but kindness and take away only gratitude.
Amen.
First Responsive Reading: “A Scout’s Responsibility”
Leader: When we hike a quiet trail…
All: We walk with care.
Leader: When we see a piece of trash…
All: We leave the space better than we found it.
Leader: When we feel the warmth of the sun or the wind on our face…
All: We remember the gifts of creation.
Leader: When we are trusted to protect nature…
All: We answer with stewardship and respect.
Second Prayer: Interfaith Voices on Creation
Let us listen to the wisdom of many traditions:
From the Hindu Rig Veda:
‘The Earth is our mother. We are her children. May she give us her blessings and protection.’
From the Quran:
‘It is He who made you custodians on the Earth and raised some of you in ranks over others, so He may test you in what He has given you.’ (6:165)
From the Jewish Talmud:
‘Do not destroy anything. Even cutting down a tree without purpose is like shedding blood.’
From the Christian Bible:
‘The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.’ (Genesis 2:15)
From the Lakota tradition:
‘The Earth does not belong to us. We belong to the Earth.’
Spirit of All, may these teachings guide us to act not as owners, but as stewards.
Let us protect the wild, cherish the quiet, and restore what has been harmed.
Amen.
Main Message: “Living as Stewards of Nature”
Scouts, one of the most important things we learn from time in nature is that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves.
When we camp under the stars, hike through forests, or paddle across a lake, we are reminded that the world is full of wonder – but also responsibility.
In Scouting, we say ‘Leave No Trace,’ but stewardship is more than just cleaning up after ourselves. It’s about learning to listen to the land. It’s about knowing that when we take care of the Earth, we are taking care of future generations.
In every faith, nature holds deep meaning. It is a gift, a trust, and a teacher.
When we pick up trash on a trail, plant a tree, or protect an animal’s habitat, we are living out our faith, our values, and our Scout Oath.
So let’s ask ourselves:
– Do we treat water, air, and land as sacred?
– Do we teach others by our example?
– Do we make choices that respect the Earth, even when it’s inconvenient?
Nature doesn’t speak with words, but it speaks with beauty and balance. And we have a choice every day to honor that balance or break it.
As Scouts, we choose to honor it.
As people of faith, we choose to protect it.
As citizens of Earth, we choose to care.
So today, let us go forward ready not just to enjoy nature — but to serve it.
Second Responsive Reading: “Caretakers of the Earth”
Leader: When the forest breathes…
All: We listen.
Leader: When the water flows…
All: We give thanks.
Leader: When the animals wander…
All: We respect their space.
Leader: When the land calls out for care…
All: We answer with action and love.
Closing Benediction
May the wind remind you of freedom.
May the trees remind you of patience.
May the rivers remind you to keep moving forward.
And may your hands always be ready to care for this Earth — our shared and sacred home.
Go in peace, go in purpose, and go with the spirit of stewardship.
